My Nokia N900

by seb on Mar.07, 2010, under Misc

So, I’ve had my Nokia N900 for about 2 months, and I have to say that this is the best phone I have ever seen/used/owned. The main draw is the fact that it’s Maemo-based, giving it the customization that any geek would love. I’ve, so far, set up a custom start-up video, custom icons and images, and custom ringtones and sounds. Besides that, the repositories of FREE applications and games that go with it are worthwhile, for sure.

The Nokia N900’s design is sleek, menus are intuitive, and the features never end. Coupled with the Nokia BH-804 Bluetooth Headset for Nokia Phones, I can listen to all of my music on my phone whenever I want (doing laundry, washing my car, walking around the office, or anything else). I can put MP3s, FLACs, OGGs, and many other formats of music on this puppy, and it’ll play! Not to mention a simple headphone jack output, for use just about anywhere that will accept 1/8″ stereo inputs (or at least a conversion to it).

Tons more info, and reviews, listed here:

SBS 2008 Company Name in RWW

by seb on Sep.07, 2009, under Programming/Scripting, Work

So I recently set up a Small Business Server 2008 for a customer. In getting it prepped prior to installing the machine onsite, I set up some of the basic functions (as much as I could without it actually being there). One of the things I screwed up on was the company name that shows up when you hit the base Remote Web Workplace page:

rww-wrongname

Luckily, there is a very simple way to correct this. I wasn’t able to find any answers online, so maybe this is common knowledge for SBS admins. First, locate the following file:

C:\Program Files\Windows Small Business Server\Data\RWWConfig.xml

Give your domain admin user full rights to this file, accepting any UAC prompts along the way. Next, open the file in notepad, and you’ll have a file that looks similar to the following:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<RWWConfig>
  <fileName>RWWPluginSBS, Version=6.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31bf3856ad364e35</fileName>
  <className>Microsoft.WindowsServerSolutions.IWorker.RWW.RWWPluginSBS</className>
  <signinOrgName>WrongName, Inc.</signinOrgName>
  <signinBackgroundImage>images/background.jpg</signinBackgroundImage>
  <signinUserBackgroundImage></signinUserBackgroundImage>
  <orgLogo></orgLogo>
  <wssgLogo>images/RwwOemLogo.png</wssgLogo>
  <readEmailIcon>images/E-mail.png</readEmailIcon>
  <connectToComputerIcon>images/RemoteDesktop.png</connectToComputerIcon>
  <internalWebSiteIcon>images/CompanyWeb.png</internalWebSiteIcon>
  <changePasswordIcon>images/changepassword.png</changePasswordIcon>
  <helpDocumentationIcon>images/Help32.png</helpDocumentationIcon>
  <adminConsoleIcon>images/AdminConsole.png</adminConsoleIcon>
  <helpDeskIcon>images/helpdesk.png</helpDeskIcon>
  <techNetIcon>images/technet.png</techNetIcon>
  <showOWALink>true</showOWALink>
  <showTSLink>true</showTSLink>
  <showSharepointLink>true</showSharepointLink>
  <showChangePasswordLink>true</showChangePasswordLink>
  <showHelpDocumentationLink>true</showHelpDocumentationLink>
  <showAdminConsoleLink>true</showAdminConsoleLink>
  <showHelpDeskLink>true</showHelpDeskLink>
  <showWebGadget>true</showWebGadget>
  <showCustomOrgLinks>true</showCustomOrgLinks>
  <showCustomAdminLinks>true</showCustomAdminLinks>
</RWWConfig>

If you don’t already see it, find the following line to edit the organization name:

<signinOrgName>WrongName, Inc.</signinOrgName>

Simply change this name to whatever the correct name is, or anything you want to be displayed there:

<signinOrgName>RightName, Inc.</signinOrgName>

Refresh your RWW page, and there you have it:

rww-rightname

There are a ton of other options in that particular XML file, so poke around.

Long story short…

by seb on Aug.12, 2009, under Misc, Work

My vacation was interrupted for 3 consecutive days by an emergency call for a customer. Needless to say, it was hardly a vacation.

Been extremely busy with work in general, hoping for a break in the chaos (no pun intended, John). Finally signed up for a Facebook account, at the extreme pressure from my sister.

That’s all for now.

Woke up, got out of bed, dragged a comb across my head

by seb on Jun.26, 2009, under Cars, Movies

Ordered pizza last night, watched Capote, and played a ton of video games, until about 3am. I’d say that’s a great first vacation day.

Today should be a bit more productive: Working on the 350z and various little annoyances with it, potentially getting a haircut, and attempting to locate an Amp Tradin’ Paint energy drink in the area, at the recommendation of Mike.
